Instructions for daily foot care

Lower extremity abnormalities and problems have an impact on the quality of life. However, most of us do not see the connections between healthy feet, well-being and the quality of life. We at Askelklinikat and Finsole want to give you good advice in order to keep your feet in good condition at the beginning of the 21st cen.

  1.  Do not underrate foot pain – pain is never normal. If the pain persists, make an appointment with a physician or a specialized physiotherapist.
  2. Check you feet regularly. Pay attention to
    • Changes in the color and temperature of your feet
    • Thick or different colored toenails (which is a sign of a developing fungal infection), and
    • chapped or ulcerated skin.
    • Remember that peeling or filing the sole skin may cause the development of the athlete’s foot. Any kind of thickening or fungal growth in your feet is abnormal.
  3. Wash your feet regularly, especially the skin between the toes, and wipe them carefully.
  4. Cut your toenails straight but not too short. Cut the edges of nails carefully in order to avoid ingrowth. Those suffering from diabetes, poor blood circulation or heart disease should have their feet treated by a specialist, because self-care may cause more harm (e.g. infections) than good.
  5. Use some kind of foot deodorant (e.g. FootDeo) for daily foot hygiene.
  6. Use only footwear of the right size. When you buy shoes, it is recommendable to try them on in the afternoon, because at that time of the day your feet are slightly swollen and at their largest size. Discard worn-out shoes.
  7. Choose proper footwear according to use: training shoes for running, indoor training shoes for indoor sports, etc.
  8. Do not use the same footwear every day. Let the shoes “rest” and get dry.
  9. Walk barefoot because it strengthens the muscles of your feet. However, be aware that bare feet are at higher risk of injury and infection.
  10. Be aware of the risks of self-care in the treatment of foot problems; it may turn a small problem into a big one.
  11. If you suffer from diabetes, you should get an annual foot examination at a physician or a specialist.
  12. Most foot support problems can be treated with orthotics. For further information see www.finsole.com.
