A stiff ankle is the opposite of an overpronated ankle. Stiff ankle means that when the weight load moves to the foot, the foot does not pronate or bend but the ankle stays in a “zero position” or even supinates, which is the opposite of pronation. A stiff ankle increases the risk of different injuries more than a pronated ankle, because a stiff ankle prevents shock absorption, which is important for the body.
Stiff ankle as well as overpronated ankle are not discomforts or disabilities in themselves, but they may cause different kinds of discomforts. A stiff ankle can be treated with an orthotic that guides the ankle towards pronation. An increased mobilization of the joints is often an important part of the treatment.
