Podiatric physiotherapy treats problems with lower extremities and feet. Functional problems resulting from congenital physiological factors, trauma, poor muscular condition, bad foot wear, overweight, pregnancy or increased strain are treated and healed with podiatric physiotherapy. Lower extremity dysfunctions have a large impact on our all-over bodily functions.
Podiatric physiotherapy examines the functioning of musculoskeletal system starting from the lower extremities. When a foot functions well, it adapts to the surface and keeps us in balance. On the one hand, a foot should be flexible (pronation) and work as a shock absorber, and on the other hand, it needs to be stiff as a lever when we jump. If our feet function incorrectly e.g. in the above mentioned basic purposes it leads to sore feet and could affect our bodily functions.
If a foot is too flexible (overpronation) it rotates the entire lower extremity into an erroneous position. The knee and the hip positions change resulting in an abnormal strain for the joints bearing surfaces. Abnormal strain leads to pain and could harm the joints. A difference in lower extremity length is a usual cause of dysfunction and back problems.
The most frequent lower limb problems are presented in detail under the headline Footproblems.
