Overpronation

Overpronation occurs when the ankle rotates inward. Normally, when the weight moves to the foot during walking, the ankle pronates. The pronation is part of the body's shock absorption. However, when the ankle overpronates, this may cause injuries or pain in soft tissues (in muscles and tendons, for example) and in bone structures. Overpronation itself is not a discomfort or disability but it may cause the problems described above or other kind of harm.

Overpronation can be corrected with orthotics, which reduce pronation and, therefore, guide the lower extremity towards the right pattern of motion. Guided foot and shin muscle exercises are often an important part of the treatment.
