There are nerves between the metatarsal bones. The metatarsal bones may begin to pinch these nerves due to, for example, a collapsed crosswise arch or tight footwear. One of the nerves that are compressed between bones gets irritated and swells, which typically causes pain that resembles an electric shock in the metatarsus. This occurs most typically between the 3rd and 4th metatarsal bones.
The pain cased by the Morton’s neuroma can be relieved with physiotherapy. The collapsed crosswise arch is easily corrected with supporting orthotics, and correcting the foot’s position relieves the pain. The irritated nerve may also have some mobility problems, but they can often be corrected by mobilizing the nerve and nerve sheath.
