Hallux valgus means that the big toe is rotated as shown in the picture. Because of the poor toe alignment, there is overgrowth in the metatarsal bone. The joint capsule on the outside edge of the first joint of the toe may get inflamed or irritated due to the compression. The collapsed transverse arch and the overpronated ankle increase the risk of hallux valgus. In addition, narrow shoes are a major external factor. On the other hand, genes may have an impact on the poor toe position.
Hallux valgus can be prevented with orthotics and individual exercise in case there are wrong patterns of motion of the feet. If the hallux valgus is already progressed, the pain can be relieved or even removed with orthotics. In some cases, surgical treatment is necessary, especially if the toe alignment is remarkably poor.
